    Hi,
Glad I found your blog, I’ve wondered about green tea for a while but did not know much about how it works.
Your tip about hot peppers says they help release stress hormones, speeding up metabolism to burn more calories – but on your post about green tea it says green tea helps to counter stress hormones that can cause weight gain. I’m not sure I understand how stress hormones can be good in one case but not in the other. Can you explain please?

    Hello Claire,
Sorry for late reply I was out of town, which post are you referring to about Green Tea, not sure which one that is?

Anyway the stress hormone in question is Cortisol. In some women this hormone has been known to cause excess storage of fat, especially in the abdomenal area. So when the statement is made about stress and weight gain this is probably what they are referring to.

But, whether or not a particular individual’s stress levels will result in high cortisol levels and weight gain is not really predictable and will vary greatly because the amount of cortisol secreted in response to stress will vary among individuals, with some persons being innately more “reactive” to stressful events.

There are other factors related to weight loss and gain such as, metabolic rate, diet and food intake, exercise, and even the types of food consumed as well as genetics that play a bigger role in both weight loss and gain.

So those products that deem to eliminate the stress hormone from being released are aiming to prevent the above from happening.

But, as far as the peppers go, the stress hormone apparently speeds up metabolism which will aid in weight loss. Of course, there is the possibility for some women that that stress hormone will also activate that storage of fat in the belly, but I also doubt that any woman could eat enough peppers to make that an issue.

    Hope this clears things up!

Another thing is that the stress hormone released with peppers is Capsacin and not Cortisol, which is a bigger culprit as related to weight gain.

And the peppers only temporarily release Capsacin that speeds up metabolism and would not have the same effect as actual long term stress effects that will trigger a more long term stress hormone effect and then have a relation to weight gain and diet.

That is an interesting study about the soup. Of course, it only concerned chicken and rice soup. Other soups may have had a different outcome.
