Robert Coleman Atkins, MD (October 17, 1930 – April 17, 2003) was an American physician and cardiologist and inventor of the Atkins Nutritional Approach, Atkins Diet Plan, a popular but controversial way of dieting that entails close control of carbohydrate consumption, emphasizing protein and fat intake, including saturated fat in addition to leaf vegetables and dietary supplements and absolutely no refined sugar.
In my opinion, one of the best free diet plans out there, the Atkins Diet plan, prescribes no sugar and very limited carbohydrates, like leafy green vegetables, tomatoes and unlimited eating of allowed foods, like all meats, fish and chicken, eggs, cheese and more. No bread, pasta or starches allowed. Exercise is optional.
Carbohydrates are limited to certain vegetables for the beginning weeks of the diet and then fruits, like berries and other good carbohydrates are integrated in. This diet focuses on proteins and fats and carbohydrate free foods as the main diet and has been very successful for many people, who have lost lots of weight and quickly with the Atkins free diet plan.
The Atkins Diet Plan consists of 4 phases that starts with an Induction Plan where absolutely no cheating is allowed, this allows the body to go into a state called Ketosis, in which the elimination of carbs allows the body to start using stored fat for energy and therefore burning fat rapidly.
There is a nice long list of foods that are allowed to be consumed at will within each phase, without limits and the Atkins Diet Plan encourages eating when hungry and does not support the skipping of meals at all. Eating is encouraged, what a concept!!!
As one moves through the phases other foods, like fruits are introduced slowly and the dieter then gages progress and balances the correct portion of carbs that will facilitate on going weight loss. The four phases is what sets this diet apart from the temporary diet plans, this is a lifestyle change, a complete eating evolution and a long term permanent solution to a healthy body.
By no means is the Atkins Diet Plan a rapid, fad or extreme diet plan, like the Banana Diet, Grapefruit Diet or Fruit Flush Diet.
Those that commit to the Atkins Diet Plan, will see a significant lifestyle change in eating habits and food cravings. Eliminating sugars and carbs like pasta, completely change the appetite and promote long term weight loss. Mad cravings disappear and there is a feeling of renewed energy. This was my experience with the Atkins Diet Plan and I have lost over 80 pounds in about 9 months.
The amazing thing about the Atkins Diet plan is that hunger diminishes greatly, and while many think that carbs, such as bread and pasta are what satisfy hunger, this is a complete myth, they actually stimulate hunger. When eating a protein rich diet with meats, chicken, fish, eggs, seafood, cheese and good carbohydrates from certain vegetables, you will find your self extremely un-hungry and satisfied. For those that say Atkins increases cholesterol levels, study after study has shown this not to be true. And, much of the proteins I eat are lean, like chicken, turkey and lots of fish, like one of the best fat burning foods, salmon. The point is there are lots of choices on the Atkins Diet Plan, and no starvation and therefore no depseration, the keys to long term success.
The other great thing about the Atkins Diet Plan is that while there is absolutely no sugar allowed, they make magnificent products, such as energy bars and shakes that taste so good and really satisfy the sweet tooth.
But, what I noticed after only three weeks on the Atkins Diet Plan is that I no longer craved cake, cookies or that sweet midnight snack like I used to, my whole eating and hunger system had taken on a different balance.
I for one love the Atkins Diet Plan, it has changed my life, and I have never looked better, and more importantly I have never felt better.
